Apistogramma are also monogomous, so you would want a pair, though as usual you may need to start with more females to establish one. Be careful, technically what you want to do is possible, but Apisto's can be quite aggressive so you'll want to keep a close eye on things.

Alone I think so, with other bottom-dwelling, cichlids or slow fish, you may have serious trouble on your hands.
