So I decide to clean my 60L, which for sometime has been being a bit neglected in my room. My four cories, 3 male and 1 female generally lay a few eggs every couple of weeks, but after trying to hatch and raise some (failing miserably) I generally left them alone to be eaten or fungass.

But I was completely amazed when I was shifting stuff around and found 3 3/4inch jeuveniles swimming about!!! :hyper:

They are soo cool and tiny, no surprise why I could not see them!

Well just thought I'd share, oh and now I can show off to the LFS who were having a competition on who coulod breed cories quickest :shifty: he he

Well done you, what a lovely surprise!

Oh, how lovely! Do yours just breed out of the blue? I've been longing to play the Amazonian rainy season trick on mine (bloodworms and cool showers), but haven't really got the time to look after fry at the moment.

Nice one! We have managed to raise one from a batch of eggs. Like you, we tended to allow the eggs either to be eaten or we scraped them off the side of the tank. We have not the facilities to raise loads of fry. However, as a slight experiment, we scraped some eggs off the side of the big tank (40UK gallons) and literally dumped them in a little 32 litres tank we use for quarantining or any other times we need a spare tank.

Out of perhaps 10-15 eggs we raised one baby who is soooooooooooooo cute! He has grown enough now and is in my son's 16 gallon tank with a few other corys', swordtails etc. He is doing fine. Nice when they are your own  :D :)

easy to breed?

how you tell the sex?
Hi Jo and Gra :)

Some corys are easier to breed than others. The juliis you are thinking about getting will be harder to get to spawn than some of the others. The C. aeneus, either bronze or albino, or the peppered corys, C. paleatus are the best ones to start with if you are thinking about breeding.

The females are bigger than the males when they are mature. If you look at the first two pictures of this thread, I'm sure you will be able to pick out the two females and three males:

These fish have already spawned for me even though I did nothing to encourage it.

If you are interested in spawning and raising an egg laying kind of fish, the corys I mentioned are excellent ones to start with. :D

Hi Seb R :)

Congratulations!

Now when you are ready to try to raise a whole batch again, post in the Catfish forum, before they spawn, and we will help you get set up right. They are not hard if you are prepared ahead of time. :D

Gotta say they are very cute. I did once take around 40 eggs out, hatched most of them ok, but I was getting losses, so I just put the rest of the wrigglers back. I dont ususally use the amazon rains thing, mine just do it on their own, they really do not need motivating lol

Think I'm going to try with my pygmies now :D
