I went in the shop to get water treatment and had a look at the fish while I was there. The heaters in the tanks looked real filthy, covered in green - is this ok? or should I look elsewhere for my fish? wasn't a great choice there anyway

If you have doubts, and selection isn't what you want then I would absolutely go elsewhere. It is good to shop around and look at other places to get an idea of what is out there. Then you can make better choices.

I absolutely agree!
I get my fish stock/equipment from around 3/4 different fish shops in my area, and I've found the quality of fish can differ between each

there's a good pinned topic with members reviews of pet stores in the tropical chit chat section, there's a US and UK one, should point you to some good and steer you away from bad lfs's in your area :good:

Thanks I'll look on there :)
Tanks with algae growing on surfaces do unfortunately look a bit crappy but most of the time are perfectly fine. A bit of algae will always be hanging around in most tanks and doesn't always indicate bad tank maintainance at a poor shop. Most shops / fish keepers are happy to clean the front + side glass but usually the heater and back glass get left cos theyre a pain to get to (well they are in my tank!).
