Title says it all, where I live in missouri there isnt very many pet stores that have many fish unless I go to St.louis City 70 miles away(I live in a small town, yes, I would be considered a hillbilly by some, .

Granted thats not that far and i go up there all the time, I just don't buy fish there, because of the drive back, I am afarid somethign would happen to them.

So I found out there was a petco, about 50 miles away, so I decided to go up there and check it out.

They did have alot of stuff, fish wise, only 4 tanks of saltwater though, but only 1 had 2 fish in it, lol it was a yellow discus looking fish, and the other was a black fish, with like a dark blue looking stripe where his eyes are running up/down, and it had a funny looking short double spiked tail, anyway...

they had 8 tankes of goldfish. a normal varity of popular kinds, bubbleeye, commons, blackmores, ect.

And alot of tropical tanks, and alot of them was bare, espevcially the chiclid tanks, one had one tiger oscar in it and that was all, but it had tages for like 5 differnt types of fish in it, bet I know what happened to them, lol

I asked the guy in there if they had any plant substrate like eco and he had no idea what i was talking about, he said they don't stock "plant dirt", lol and then he picked up a bag of dirt from the reptile supplies and said "this is the closrest thing we would care close to dirt"?

I asked if they had any blue rams, and he said he no, i asked if they had any small dwarf plecos, and he pointed me to a tank full of common plecos and said these would stay small depending on the tank i had(that pissed me off!!) but i kept my mouth shut, as there was alot of little kids in there.

What I really went in there for was to see if what bettas they had, they had about 20 altogeter, like 5 females, 5 crowntail, and the rest was regular vailtails, they all looked like they could are less if they lived ot died, only one of them a yellow crowntail even moved much whenever i moved the cups, the rest of them, didnt care, I put a bunch together to see if i could get this real small black crowntail to flare, so i could see the finnage, but he wouldn't, infact I moved almost all of them facing each other and not a damn one would flare at the others

I asked when they got their shipment in of bettas and he said on tuesdays, I asked if they ever get any other kind in like halfmoons and he looked puzzled for a few seconds and said no this is what we get in and he said he had worked there for almost 2 years.

On the plus side they did have alot of frozen food, i would go there to get that atleast, since they had a pretty good selection and in different amounts.

I was not too impressed, to say the least

I asked if he knew of anyplace around that sold good bettas and he said "Wal-Mart"

I said i ment ones that would be worthy to breed, and he said "Oh, you mean real ones" :hyper:

I said yes, he said there was a place called Topical World Pets that should have what im looking for, so I guess thats where I will have to try next and risk traveling a ways with a fish if I buy one to get it home, as there is only 2 places around me that has even a poor choice of fish.

I HOPE THEY ARE NOT ALL LIKE THIS ONE!!!

Ther is a petsmart also, I might try there

The drive back from St. Louis won't be a problem. People order fish online all the time and they are bagged for at least 18 hours plus. Just tank a small styrofoam cooler to stick the bag in so that it doesn't get too cool from the car AC. Even if takes 2 or 3 hours, that's not an issue.

My petsmart sux. The tanks have algae all over and the water is murky. Theres also dead fish lying around. When i used to buy fish there (back when they were clean), every time i bought fish they got diseases. I now only go to my pet supermarket 5 min away from me. The people who work there all know me and they are very educated about fish. All of the people who work there have atleast 2 fish tanks and take part in forums.

i worked at petco for a whole two weeks then called and told them i was never stepping foot in that nasty place again. never have either. i was hired to be a dog groomer and they were suppose to pay for my schooling but no after a wk and a half they told me no school that the lady was leaving so with no schooling or a license i was now the head groomer. sorry but no way in h####! thats what i need someones poodle with a bad hair cut. and i could go on and on. the nicest petco i've ever see was in Nashville.

I went to PetCo today to look for a new filter for the tank I am setting up.

It was awful.

There was a woman in there seeking help with a small tank that is set up but isn't being used. Her fish had died and she wanted to put new fish in...

Yes, I was listening in to their conversation!

From what I gather, there were problems with her water and the sales guy was railing on her that she wasn't telling him the truth about her tank and that she MUST have fish in there to have the water problem that she has. I was thinking if it were me he was talking to, I would have just walked out on him.

When I left, I was going to ask for the manager to complain about the sales persons attitude and the way he had spoke to the woman... He WAS the MANAGER!!!

I won't be going back.

In my actual town there is a LPS, it's decent, really expensive(more expensive then most), there fish are in good condition most of the time, but they are just to expensive for me. But if I drive 40 miles there's a petco and petsmart, IMO petsmart is MUCH better, they are less expensive, healthier fish, and actually have people working there that know atleast a little bit. The Petco often has sickly looking fish, and are more expensive then petsmart.

Well, I guess that might it just be my local petco, but nearly 3/4 of the store is dedicated to fish. I was actually impressed at their equiptment and fish stock, they had like 30+ marine tanks that were fully stocked. Needless to say, i had a good experience

The chains stores really depend on the manager and who works there. There is a Petco near my office that is decent and a Petsmart near where I used to work that was one of the cleanest stores I've been in. I bought several fish from them. The quality of the store is no better than the manager that is responsible for it.

There are two Petco's near me. The closest one isn't that great. Usually there are two or three tanks under quarantine with "fish under observation" signs. I looked at the other tanks and there was one dead fish, another had a clamped fin with fungus. I didn't see any saltwater tanks? The other Petco looked a little better. One customer wanted a false Clown (had freshwater) but the salesman said No, to research online and read books. That was good. When I end up getting a new tank, I'll probably trek into SF (15miles) to the more specialized LFS's.

I've been to a few PetCo's and PetSmart's and on the average the PetSmarts are better although all the PetCo's save the one nearest to me have been decent and even the one near me isn't terrible, just kind of sloppy and understaffed. It really depends on the management as rdd1952 said. The PetCo nearest me has maybe four to six full time staff there at any given time for the entire store. That includes registers, fish, grooming, birds, herps, etc. They do what they can but it isn't much.

My local Petco is horrible, their fish are always dead, diseased or dying, and they just keep selling them. I went in once to get some meds for a bacterial infection in my cichlid tank (never did figure out how that one happend), and the little girl that helped me actually told me that my fish got sick because I had too many (19 1" juveniles in a 75gallon tank), and I changed my water too often. She even called their "fish expert" at home and that idoit agreed, did you all realize that everytime you change you water you're "throwing away" all of your good bacteria? And all I asked the girl was if they had a larger pack of the med I wanted. Sorry, rant over.

The Petsmart here is much better, I still QT all my fish though, better safe than sorry.
