Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has the same issue I have with well water. In the tank its not so pleasant to have
tanish-looking water and was wondering if there was some methods that people use to fix this probelm.
If you have ideas could you please post im very interested in what you have to say about this
unpleasant water source.
THANK YOU. :)

I take it this is drinking quality water?

Easy solution make a tannin tank and choose your fish appropriately many freshwater fish need tannins to initiate breeding and some brackish fish much prefer tannin water as it is more accurate a copy of their natural environment.

You could build a full large scale mechanical filter to remove the tannins but it takes a long time unless your spending large funds on industrial scale pumps.

is the water 'tannish' when you put it in? i.e. is your tap water coloured?

if it isn't, then do you have a lot of bogwood in the tank? If so, that will be causing the colour change. Eventually the wood will stop releasing the tannins but it could take considerable time.

I believe added activated carbon to your filter will remove it.

yes the water that comes out of the tap is tanish color and no I dont have any wood in my tank. also we dont drink our water just shower in it and we buy water to drink.
could this water be harmfull to 1 channel catfish and 3 goldfish?

Not at all. You have an ideal start to a tannin tank. go with what you have rather than what you want & your fish will be well chuffed.

Not at all

I have two large pieces of bogwood in my tank, I have had them in there about 18 months now and before me the last person had them in there tank for a number of years. Tanning in my tank is worse than others and people who dont know fish ask why is your water dirty, gee they havent got a clue.

I have in the past used Active Carbon inbetween the filters in two sections of my external and it did make a difference, problem is it only lasts about 4-6 weeks and then its replace it. For me its about cost, food, fish, water safe, electric,,,, It all adds up so I look for the cheapest way of doing things.

must say since adding my fish to tank the water has cleared dramaticly so not sure if it was tanning or a bateria blossom or something completely differenet

I just keep two filters on my tank and the water clears up in like 3 days. larger fitration that can filter more gallons a minute will cear your tank faster then a smaller filter with less gallons per minute. If you spend the money in the start to buy a bigger filter it will clear your water faster and will save you money in the long-term. :good: :)
