Well on Sunday we popped 3 Pearl Gourami and 1 smaller Angel in the tank. Earlier today all were all swimming round, eating fine. This evening We spot the Angel dead on the bottom of the tank! At no point have we seen any of the tank mates harassing it (see sig for stocking). Tank parameters are spot on (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 Nitrate, PH 6.4 (same as our tap water and the shop waters is the same too).

We inspected it for any signs of illness or injury and none whatsoever. Not even a scratch. Should I just right it off as a fluke? Or is there a more obvious answer I should be looking for :S

0 Nitrate is not impossible. Plants absorb nitrates as fertilizer, and in a heavily planted, low stocked tank, the plants absorb any nitrates that are made before a whole lot is made again. My Fluval Chi has 3 cherry shrimp and 1 Betta and it always has 0 nitrates.

It's most likely a fluke, nothing you did seems wrong. How long had the store had them? I always wait a week on more sensitive fish, just in case they didn't ship well.

How long has the tank been setup for?

Yes... 0 Nitrate. The tank is heavily planted and the majority of fish in there are very small juveniles. So the test kit is not even registering Nitrates up to 5. (Yes the test kit is in date, yet it is working fine I tried it on some water from a fish shop bag).

Anyway thanks thereverendturtle I believe they had had them just less than a week. I'm writing it off as a fluke to be honest although I will be keeping a very close eye on everyone else in the tank!

This tank has been running for a couple of weeks snazzy however it was seeded with the filter media from a long established tank (as in all the filter media from the old tank so it easily coped with the bio load of the original fish and we gradually added more fish following water tests).
