I finally actually used my API test kit on my tap water and here are my results:

Ammonia: 0.25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
pH: 7.2

How is it possible my readings are not 0 for ammonia out of my tap water? I did the test several times and from different taps in the house and still the same reading. The test tube never turned completly yellow, it it was yellow with that very small touch of green.

Will this effect me in future when running a 55 gal?

Thanks for any help, Rob

it wont affect your tank to mutch once it's established and got good nitrates but its prety sick sick youve got ammonia in tap water seen as its basically piss

It's not unheard of to have ammonia in your tap water. That amount shouldn't be a problems as your bacteria will process it quickly after water changes. Doing a 20% water change would only put the level to about .05 anyway. You may want to call the local water company just to see if they know it's in there and ask why.

thanks I have already ordered the eheim 2217 which has 1000lph output for my new approx 55gal tank that Im buying today so it should hopefully process the tanks water capcity quicker. To tell you the truth Sydney has a major water crisis on its hand because at the moment our main dam level is at 39% because there is many droughts over here. So who knows what chemicals they add in their water because the lower the water in a dam the dirtier.
Sydney is going to build a desalination plant over the next few years its that bad lol.
