After doing a deep clean of gravel substrate, I noticed a small 2mm piece of what I thought was debris on my knuckle. When it did not brush off, I scraped with fingernail to remove it and it drew blood and was attached to me. Whatever it was is full of blood, unfortunately I killed it, but have it saved in a small dish. My wound, while small, itches slightly.

Any ideas?

Could you maybe find more and get pics? Or a clear description of what it looked like?

Could you have cut yourself on a sharp piece of gravel that stuck to your hand, kinda like a splinter?

If they are parasites, you will see them attached to the fish. But chances are it was just a baby leach, as mentioned by others. Nothing major to worry about unless there are hundreds in the tank feeding off the fish.

I’d worry too and carefully run my fingers through the substrate & inspect, but I‘ve never seen sharp gravel for tanks, so could have been a once in a lifetime weird event . Maybe you could remove some & look too.
