Hi All,

Went to my LFS this morning and saw some Weather Loaches there that looked interesting.
Can't find much about them.
Are they ok for a general community set up?

Thanks

No. These are coldwater fish and need a low temperature. Also, there need lots of flow and a powerful filter as they produce a lot of wastle. And they need long tanks too, as they get to 10" long.

They take years to get that long, I had one in a tropical set up and it was fine I just had to introduce him slowly, some lfs's have them in tropical set ups too just check before you buy is all. Mine was in a 100 litre tank and he loved it.

I've 2 in a 125ltr mixed with 4 goldfish. They get on fine but for some reason they hassle the goldfish when it's feeding time. Still there's no harm done.

They do best in a tank with a soft sand substrate (rounded/smooth gravel is OK, but never use rough gravel) kept at cool sub-tropical temperatures (between 18-23degrees) or slightly cooler temps. They do best in a tank with a large surface area (gallons is everything- its the length of the tank that counts) and their care is much like other loaches.

Its pretty much the greatest fish in the world. their behavior is insane, just get more than one though cause they dont handle being alone very well.

they're easily hand fed which is pretty awesome. this is probably due to the fact that they have terrible eyesight and are actually nearly blind from what i hear. they'll eat anything but they should have some meat in their diet.

..and they will dig up plants, so that can be a bummer.

great fish overall though, i highly recommend.
