Weather Loaches

LOL

I think they detect changes in the atmosphere and have a reaction. IME the changes have to be quite drastic for them to react. This being swimming erratically and being generally weird.

Mine do it quite well! They are known as 'living barometers'!!

Most common are the Common, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cantor) and Spotted, Cobitis taenia (Linnaeus) Dojos or Weatherfishes. They are often called "living barometers" of their increased activity at the approach of changing weather. These fishes are pressure-sensitive, swimming about more if its about to rain for instance.

When there is a sudden change in pressure the fish will becone very active and go into a frenzy. Quite good ehh

They do it , mine were amazing . I'd see them going nuts right before or just as a storm would come in . Also mine liked to burrow in the substrate . Either I'd be looking around the tank and only see a head sticking out of the gravel or , I'd find them while using gravel vacume . You know when you stick it into the gravel and out flies a loach  .hard to believe I didn't hurt any that way . Ifound out the ones I had did better in cool water as opposed to tropical .

I used to have these little guys and they predicted weather quite nicely........started swimming all nutzo and the like. They let me know a tornado was coming and saved me and my doggies lives.........

Umm.....haven't told anyone else in the non-fish realm except my Mom, and she believes most of what I say just 'cause she is partial to me  . But if I were to tell them, I know what kind of look I would get, you are right, it would be :alien: .

I will tell you a very condensed story of how it all took place. I had been outside all day in the garden with my doggies (Jose, Nikkerbelle, and Smellmito) and was by myself. My yard was huge, and far from the house. There were clouds in the sky, but if any of you have been to Oklahoma you have heard the saying "If you don't like the weather in Oklahoma then just wait five minutes". It is always changing, and I wouldn't ever get anything done if I went in everytime there were clouds. So..............I go in the house for a bit to get a drink of water...........and there are my weather loaches swimming like I have never seen them swim before.......like they were on crack! That prompted me to turn the weather on the TV and a tornado was headed my way! I was out in the country, so no sirens were blaring. I ran to get my babies that were scattered all over the property, and ran to the storm shelter. We barely made it in time, the tornado hit close to where I had just been and knocked our electrical service post over onto the house and it caught fire. If I had been there........................ :byebye:.........and my doggies............................ :byebye: :-( :byebye: they would have just flown away.

Thanks Weather Loaches! :D

That's an awesome story, Olive! You should seriously contact Animal Planet - they might put a small segment in some sort of animal hero show. I bet they don't get fish heroes too often!
