I went to the fish store today hoping that they might have some weather loaches to go with the gold dojo loaches i already have... and to my surprise they actually did. they looked pretty awful though. the guy said he'd give them to me for 2 dollars each being that they are in such bad shape. so i bought 2 of them.

by awful, let me explain. their barbels are very worn and flimsy, they have some fin rot mostly on the tail fins, and they have some sort of fungus in the mouth area.

So rather then throw them in the main tank where they'll probably die and spread fungus, i set up a 20 gallon quarantine tank in my basement with a mature sponge filter from one of my tanks. the quarantine tank is completely bare with a cave ornament for a hiding place. the absence of gravel should help their barbels, i think. i put extra stress coat in to repair the slime that may have been damaged in the transfer from the pet store. im going to start with melafix doses and hope for the best.

any other advice on what i should do? im going to be feeding them thawed bloodworms (much better than what the pet store was probably feeding).

any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi,

Quarantining the fish was obviously necessary and a wise decision to make; it sounds as though you have everything under foot. Though it may be common sense, my advice is to only treat one illness/disease at a time. Also, remember to remove the previous treatment using active carbon once the course is complete or the illness/disease has cleared up.

Other than that, good luck! I hope your fish make a sound recovery.

Cheers,

Luke.

arent weather loaches dojo loaches?
SAd to hear they've been cared for that way, but nice one on the rescue :good:
Have 1 myself, its so good its untrue.
Ive been starting trying to use algae tablets, seems to like it, but not sure how much of it hes gettin. But usually it enjoys leftover flakes and peas. If u try the pea, mash it up a bit before u give it him, cant really get into to it to start eating.
dont know if u have but you should try a sand substarte with the loach. I can tell he really enjoys it. Sifting through the sand and that. Really good addition to any tank.
