We were doing our daily fish-in cycle 90% water change and my husband saw a little platy fry! We have never had fish other then a Betta before now and we were both soooo excited. They are so tiny and adorable. It was hiding on the driftwood and the current got him...The giant red wag came flying out of nowhere and gone was the fry. We HAD fry for less then a minute. We learned an important lesson today. Don't name the fry until you know its going to live.

:rip: Poison. {Named Poison because our Nitrites are spiking out of control and the poor thing was basically born into a poison bath.} No worries everyone-we are doing multiple water changes a day and testing the water.

Anyway thought I'd share this little story since it was both comical and sad. Our first fry!

P.S. My hubby just found another one. Lets hope he hides better.

Poor fish but amusing story. I am having similar problems with shrimp and a greedy angel fish! Not even the adult shrimp are safe lol

My first fry was from a red Xipho female. Caught her exactly when she started dropping. They grew quite large, but didn't make it to adulthood because some of them jumped out and dried up, others just died. The last one from that batch jumped out. Oddly, I was eating fish that time and I thought that what I've stepped on was a piece of fried fish. Unfortunately, it was my last and favorite of the fry, a clear Xipho male with a black tail, which I've named Cozilla. -_- It was the first time I ever cried for a fish, second was when my favorite Hoplo catfish named Rex died after escaping his tank on Christmas Eve. :(

Other spawns were found around or under my catfish. Untouched. I collected them. Best spawns were the guppies. Most of them made it to adulthood and resulted in awesome green or red fire-patterned tailed males X). If I can raise these Xiphos I have now, I hope I can get some more fry and share with my neighbor (hope she doesn't get them killed again this time)...
