So I cleared up my community tank and decided to put in one of the male Dermogenys I'd had in a rearing tank. Within 5 minutes he'd been eaten by the female Nomorhamphus. Funnily enough (though not for the halfbeaks) I think this happened last time I put a male Dermogenys in there, but he disappeared after a few days, so I assumed he'd died (as halfbeaks do) and been eaten by the catfish. But this time, the "old girl" had a very big, very fully belly, so there was no questions about what happened!
So: note to self. Small male Dermogenys and big female Nomorhamphus do not mix. Funnily enough, she ignored the Nomorhamphus juveniles of similar size, and never ate a cardinal tetra when I kept them in there with her.
Cheers, Neale
