hi there, ive been talking over water with a few people, some say tap will be ok, but others say nothing but RO - can i have your opinions on this plz

cheers

depends on how pure your tap water is. Tap water can be too hard/soft/ full of chemicals. I, myself, prefer to use the R/O water because I know I won't have any algae blooms and won't be putting anything funny in my tank accidentally

as he said i prefer RO water. your tap may have contaminates that will build up and eventually crash your tank. or you might have really bad algea probs and such. RO water is just pure H2O nothing else. IMO its def worth it.

I don't where you're located, but i got my R/O system off E-bay. It wuz around $90 and the guy has a water filter store on there called "filter direct". My set up doesn't require that i plumb it into the sink (i live in an apartment so didn't wanna do that), i just have to attach it to the faucet when i want it, then put it in the closet when i'm done with it.

Here is the deal. Any and every salt mix is made to mix into pure water. The salt mix already has all the components in it to turn pure water into synthetic sea water. Tap water isn't pure. Some facilities are closer than others, but none of them are pure. If you mix with tap water you are adding extra nutrients, chemicals, ect. into the mix which can have very different results depending what you started with.

Now RO is the best cheapest way to obtain pure water, that is why the majority of people use it. You could also use various filters to get the same effect, but you would be changing filters all the time and they add up. You could also purchase pure water but it adds up pretty quick too. Around here water is a dollar a gallon.

Best advise is to save up and get the RO unit. Its just one less variable to deal with if something goes wrong and you have to trouble shoot your tank.

I wouldn't put anything in your marine tank except RO water or distilled water that you know does not come out of copper tubing. Tap is just not acceptable IMO. SH

I am going to follow the herd and say

Only ever used Ro in my Tanks

Just far to much cr@p from the Tap
