Hi,

I was doing some of that thinking stuff again, I know, I know, I shouldn't do it, but hey I did and look whats happened.

What do you people out there with lots of tanks do to your tap water before adding it to yours tanks? I know a lot of people use RO water, but for those who don't. Do you used water conditioners like Tetra's Aquasafe? or do you use some other method?

I ask I have now got 5 tanks, and the cost of conditioner is getting a little high now :D and was looking at other ways of readying water for use. I've read about leaving water to sit in vats for a few days so the chlorine and chloramines dissapear on their own. but anything else?

How many gallons do you have in total ?
I bought a large container of API Stress Coat months ago and it's still going to last for several months I can see. I have three tanks in a total of 80 US gallons (approx) and do weekly 50% water changes.
Don't buy small bottles of Dechlorinator / Stress coat. Buy larger quantities - it's loads cheaper.

RO water is expensive (far more than dechlor - it also has to be re-mineralised which also cost more money) and extremely wasteful - especially in the times we have at the moment with the drought.

I have about 60-70 UK Gallons of tank water.

I buy the tetra aquasafe, the 500ml bottle it lasts a few months, I just wondered if there was a cheaper way?

leaving the water out doesn't guarantee that all the toxic stuff disappears from it.

Some dechlorinators are more economical in use ( check the dosages of aquasafe versus aqua+ ) but if you are using large quantities you can buy the pond versions whiche are more concentrated.

hrm I've seen the pond versions on the net, now that might be an idea... /me will have to check their prices

Pond versions rock, 10ml does 80 Imp gallons with my one. (£9.49 buys enough for 8,000 Imp gallons).

Orrrr, if you just buy Sodium Thiosulphate crystals (the active de-chlorinating agent), you can get enough for around £50 that would keep CFC happy for most, if not all, of his life. Just a matter of finding it.

looks like I'll be buying the pond version from now on :D as it costs me around £12 for a 500ml bottle of the normal tank stuff

Pond Conditioner

Now this site is selling tetra pondsafe at 1000ml for £14.99, which treats 20,000 litres. so I work that out as 4400 UK gallons, or am I wrong. I may have worked it out wrong lol. with £4.95 delivery so thats only £19.94

So a better deal or not? I could even order £50's worth and get FREE delivery :D

would that be safe to use in the aquarium? I gather its the same stuff, seems a bit stupid to sell the smaller bottles at higher prices, if it is the same stuff. :/

Head to a pond shop, for half that price I can treat nearly twice as much.

hrm I'll have to take a look next time I'm out n about at my NOT-SO-LFS, its the best I've been to, that I can get to, and its like 30-45mins drive from where I live, but its worth the travel, and the GF drives so I don't have to, I can sit and think about what fish I'm gonna buy this time, or where to place the new tank I may buy if the moment takes me, :hyper:

so is everyone agreed the pond stuff is OK to use in aquariums, cos I need to go get some more dechlorinator today, might get some of that instead

So why is pond dechlor so cheap then ? There must be something more that doesn't meet they eye. Please enlighten me :)
