Hey,

This might seem a silly suggestion, but i'm not sure of the consequences...

My new goldie fantail aquarium is currently @ around 23/24/25 degrees. I know fantails can handle this temp, but it's not perfect. The weather we are having recently is absolutely gorgeous, but it's not helping. Plus the fact i think the light I'm using is helping to keep the water temp high.

I was wondering though, can you put ice cubes in the tank to cool the water down, rather than doing massive water changes per day? Have ice cubes got any harmful properties towards fish?

Cheers.

i dont think that ice cubes will harm your fish, afterall its only solid water. you could put the ice cubes in a plastic container and just let the ice cubes float in the container, it will cool the water outside the container aswell, try that

If you put in the ice cubes directly, it WILL hurt your fish, take my word for it. The water surrounding the ice cube is cold, too cold for tropical fish. It will lead to undue stress. If possible, put the ice cubes in the filter of in a container as guppy_man suggested.

P.T.

Adding ice only reduces temp. a tiny amount and only short term as well. It's a waste of time really + it wont be dechlorinated. As far as other methods go im not sure. Read somewhere her about someone setting up a small electric fan pointing at the water surface to try and cool things down that way. Not convinced itd work though. It'd just evaporate water. Other people have put those blue freezer packs in from lunch boxes / cool boxes. These work but yo yoing your water temp. up and down is bad for your fish. Dont know if anyone else has any ideas.

Ice cubes won't help much unless you put a lot of them in at once and replenish them all the time. Btw- they can also absorb all those nasty little particles in your freezer!

The best thing to do is get a fan or two and place it in the room facing the tank directly. THat's what I do with my 60 galon tropical/native tank. I have to keep temps at about 73-75 and my room gets about 90 degrees due to little airflow. SO I put about 2-3 fans blowing on the tank and around it. Reduces the temp considerably. If i'm really desperate I do a semi cold water change and put a bottle filled with ice in the tank.

I agree icecubes don't really do anything as the temp just goes back up to quick again, so all you are doing is stressing the fish with the temp being up and down.
All i do is increase aeration in the tank.

DO NOT USE ICECUBES they will kill your fish, Not only is it a rapid change. Its full of chlorine (depening where you live
). Just buy a cooler there expensive tho, Or just use a fan ABOVE the tank to insure equal temratures

Nobody has mentioned that the answer to this question really depends on the size of your tank, if its i teeny tiny fish bowl definately do not use the freezer pack or frozen water in a bottle trick, the water will change temparature very quickly.

Also a note on the ice cube issue, imagine somebody compacting snow around your head, doesnt feel so great does it? Got a headache? Well this is probably what it will feel like for your fish when it goes wandering over wondering what it floating around in its home.

I think you should move the fish tank into a darker cooler room, remember downstairs is always cooler than upstairs, and stop using the light for the time being. The light isnt essential for your fish so dont put it on in the day time.

Spray the front of your tank with a misty spray thing, as the water is evaporated, it pulls heat from the tank.
