My water's PH is somewhere between 8 and 9 (GH of over 25). My betta doesn't seem to mind, but my plants do (new tank). I've been told that peat in the filter can be a tad much for a newbie, so I'm looking into a water purifier for my tap. I'd assume that purifying half of the water will lower the PH and GH enough to make a difference.

Does anyone have a purifier that they recommend?

purifying the water may not all be good.
from what i know, water from the tap has alot better stuff in it ( in terms of minerals n such) than purified water does. therefore the tap water may be better for plants than the purified. i know there is a product ( cant think of name) that lowers PH ( a liquid).
also, what substrate do u have? and are u using fertalizers? because ina new tank, plants may not survive too well without help.
and, whats the PH of the water in the tank? i would imagine it will be lower than out of the tap.

:good:

dont use chemicals to lower ph, ph relies on a stable KH and GH, its a triangular balance, you may lower the PH with chemicals but it wont alter the KH, so the ph will go back to what it was before since the kh didnt change.

If it really is that bad mix half RO/DI water (RO water should have 7.0 ph, 0 KH and 0 GH) with half tap water.

The PH in the tank is between 8 and 9 (my test kit isn't very easy to use....). The water is so hard that my plants have calcium deposits on the leaves. I do use a small dose of Flourish, and my substrate is sand over flourite. They look alive, but I can't imagine that the crust is good for them (and it looks pretty bad as well). I'd like to mix my tap water with filtered in a 50% mix.
