This is reg my fish in cycle.

been cycling for about a month.

I have been doing water changes every day for ammonia. Noticed water was looking a little cloudy yest. and when i got up this morning it has got really bad. Have done a 30% Wc but no difference. It also lookis like there is a film on top of water. and my cables have got a white coating on them?

I did put 1 capful of ammo lock the other day but nothing since.

Not sure whats going on

Zoe

This might sound really stupid, but do you have really hard water coming out of your taps? I managed to send myself into a complete panic after my tank turned into soup withing a few seconds of doing a water change. I then realised that I'd tipped the kettle-full of boiled water into the bucket a bit enthusiastically and the limescale dregs had all crashed into my tank and gone cloudy. Cleared up fine the next day. I also get oily film on top of water left to stand -- if you increase surface movement does it go away?

Otherwise, could it be a bacteria bloom?

Sounds more like bacteria bloom. Its quite common in newer tanks, espesially if you have new filter / water change etc.

Its when bacteria colonise in the water very quickly and your filter cant cope yet.

it shouldnt harm your fish and water changes probably wont cure it.

Mine lasted about 24 hours, but I was adding interpet filter start and melafix.

How come your putting ammo lock in your tank ??? I thought that was for transporting fish so that they dont poision themselves.

I am having ammonia problems again after changing tanks about. I must have lost bacteria in filter. i only used one capful then havent used it since as will keep up with waterchangesZoe

If you have no fish in the tank - dont do a water change.

The bacteria bloom is often caused by large water changes, but if your doing it for the ammonia then fine.

I wouldnt add ammo lock - but I would put some melafix in, it worked for me

Sounds like your a busy bee anyway - im sure your having fun :good:

Always a busy bee. I swear by the time this tank has cycled, my arms are gonna look like mens arms with all the lifting of heavy buckets of water pmsl :hyper: I will soon be able to lift the whole tank to the sink to fill it up lol

Mrs muscle

:*

lol thats an attractive thought :X - mines in the loft conversion, so every weekend I have to hump 50 litres upstairs and 50 back down, 2 flight of stairs :( And the cat waits for me and sleeps on the stairs too

I hope it goes OK for you after all your efforts - im sure it will.

Have just done a water test in tank have done a few 20% water changes today. still very cloudy

Readings seem very strange

Ph. 6.0
Ammonia 1.0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10

I cant understand why Nitrate has jumped up to 10 when i have had no Nitrite. Hmmmmm

The only change i can think of to tank was i put in a non aquatic plant. Not sure if this plant has causd all the cloudyness and reading problems

Zoe

Could be your water changes. Whats the nitrate reading from your tap water?

RIGHT.

Somethings not right.

I have started a water change. and i have filled my bucket up with cold water and kettle water. it looks at sorto oily in bucket now. And i got like a black rim around bucket. I think it was cause of cleaning other new tank sand it it. as it was oily looking.

i am going to dump that bucket and use another to see ig this makes any change

Zoe

Ok so filled spare bucket water crystal clear in it.

When i washed my new sand the other day in bucket there seemed to be like black oily stuff. it left a black tide mark on bucket at top. my other tank looking a little cloudy now but when i filled that tank up i never filled bucket as high as black rim. so i could just pour whole bucket in.

Where as this tank i always fill it up to the rim and use a measuring jug to fill tank back up.

I still have lots of this sand left in bag. I will get a spare bucket and wash some and take a pic so u can all see the black oily substance.

It is aquarium sand as well Strange

I am going to do lots of water changes ( a little at a time) all day (well till i go to work at 4pm lol) and see if it clears. Still a lot of oily stuff ontop of tank tho.

Fish are ok
