I need to do a water change, but i forgot to fill the bucket of water last night to let it reach the temperature of the tank. I have a juwel Rekord 70 litre with the internal filter.

I was going to empty some of the water this morning whilst siphoning the gravel, then filling the bucket with water to heat it up a bit. Would it be ok to leave some of the grid uncovered on my filter during the day whilst i let the water heat up? It's really difficult to explain lol

I take it you have a cold water tank? Are you conditioning the tap water at all, or just leaving it to sit? I have a tropical tank and i just fill the bucket up with hot/cold water until it is the same temperature as my tank, then i add water conditioner to take away heavy metals, chloramines and chlorine. Take me about 5 mins.
But you need not worry about the temperature difference all too much, adding one small bucket of colder water to a 70l tank is barely going to make a difference.

So do you mean you have an under gravel filter? Or you mean the intake of the internal filter? Either way, the water level shouldn't be low enough to leave them uncovered, how much at the water are you changing at one go? It's better not to change anything over 50% weekly, I do 20% weekly.

And while some people think thy are unnecessary, always condition you water. That way you don't need to worry about leaving the bucket over night to get rid of chlorine (other substances will stay in the water if you leave it over night instead of conditioning the water)

No i have a tropical tank, it's just that the water is so cold from the tap that it would shock the fish. I have been told not to use water from the hot tap, even if i do treat the water -_-

I'm doing about 20% water change but that would uncover most of the filter intake grid (not an undergravel filter) as i have high nitrite levels at the moment.

I always treat the water, so don't worry about that, i just let the water reach a more suitable temp.

Thanks

OK well there's not much wrong with using the hot water, other than if you store it in a tank and a rat has climbed into it and died or something like that that could pollute the water. It depends on how you heat your water I guess.
What you should do is simply boil some water in the kettle and add it to the bucket :good:.
And it is very bad to uncover the filter intake when it's turned on, so just turn the filter off at water changes :).
