I have a 20 gallon tank with a few guppies and gouramis in it. How often should I change my water?

Also, How would I go about changing it. Is it better to let the water rest for a day before adding it in?

Hi and welcome. I would change 20-25% of the water once a week. You can let the water sit 24 hours and the chlorine will evaportate. It depends on your water source and what is added. I use Aquasaft water conditioner. It removes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals. It is easier and safer. Also, use a gravel vacuum/siphon to really clean-up. Clean the filter monthly but clean it in a bucket of water drained from your tank. Tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria. Don't wash the filter media, just sort of swish it around in the bucket of tank water. I do that with my weekly water changes. If you do your weekly water changes your filter media should last a lot longer than the manufacturor recommends. Good luck and enjoy.

I usually do between a 40% and 50% water change and also vacuum my gravel. You can let the water sit for 24 hours if you choose to do so, but just make sure you still treat for chloramines if you have them in your water. I use a PYTHON to clean my tanks every week. With a python, you can drain your tank and refill it without the buckets. I normally use mine hooked up to the hose outside, and that way my plants get a special treat of fishie water which makes them especially green. Since you don't let the water sit when you use a python, you just add your dechlor while the tank is refilling. I pour it in the stream of water going back in the tank.

All right

So I guess I will change 4 to 5 gallons of water weekly. I'll go buy a big bucket where i can let the water rest for a day or two.

I don't know about that Python. The website is pretty basic and doesn't explain much. I'll try to see if they have it at the lfs

I change 25% every 2 wees or so but it depends on lots of factors like maturity of the tank, parameters, filtration and stocking.

I use a gravel cleaner to get the water into a bucket and then I use the bucket to pour dechlorinated water (temp matched to touch) back into the tank.

Given your stocking level, 25 - 30% per week should work very nicely. More is needed only if you have more or messier fishes (you don't have them).

IMO, you can reduce the feeding to once a day, and given your reasonable stock level, 25 - 30% per week will also work nicely.

Bioload-wise you are ok, but isn't krib really aggressive once they are in the spawning mood? I would be interesting to see how rams (who will share the same bottom area of the tank) would come out at the end...
