Water Change

TY. I AM JUST MAKING MY WAY AROUND THE SITE. I AM FINDING MANY OF MY QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN ASKED AND ANSWERED. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER MINE.

Always make sure you Nitrate level is below 40ppm. Under that is okay. I usually do 30% too.

I have always changed about 10% of my tank water every week. I was advised this a couple of years ago when I first got my tank.

I have had no problems with the water quality so should I continue changing 10% or would people recommend I change a larger % of the water ?

I usually end up changing 20-30% of my water 3-4 times a month. Since I got the python it's SO easy. Keeps my water good and fish healthy. I vaccume about a half or a little less of the gravel each time also. I don't shut off my heater. I just take out enough water to keep it at the minimum water level for the heater. HTH

You say you use a python, Are you in the UK? If so where did you get it from and how do you use it?

A few places sell Pythons, Aquatics Online for one (plus, it's online, so it doesn't matter where you are).

No I'm in the US. I did get it online, though. I think the site was drfostersmith. I just hook it up to the faucet with the included attatchment and either close the lower end by the faucet to fill the tank or open it and run water to create suction to empty your tank. I cleaned 3 tanks the other day in less than 15 minutes! Almost seemed like I was cheating! LOL You can buy ones long enough to reach any tank. Even one on a different floor! I got the smallest one and I think I could almost change the tank next door! lol

Sounds really good. I have a 300 Ltr tank. i use a 70 ltr plastic bin to put the water in, then add declorinator and heat up the water to bring it up to temperature by using the kettle. Does any one know of anyone in the uk using the python. The only reason i ask is because it concerns me adding water from the hot tap and adding it to the tank before adding declorinator...

any ideas?

I made a DIY python for my tank which does the job well. Just need some hose, tap connector, T connector and a shut off valve. have a look in the DIY section and there is a sticky on how to make one (drop me a PM if you want a picture of the ones I have). I originally did have mine connected to both the hot and cold taps and would run the water to get an exact match. Over the last 4-5 months though (based on Andy's suggestion in another thread) I have just been using cold water and my fish have been fine (tetras, corys, rams and cherry shrimp) all of them are spawning so they must be reasonably happy. If you are worried about the change in temperature you can always take out 10% then fill say 5%, give the heater 20 minutes to warm up the water then add the other 5%. I think in a tank that size though it wont change the temperature that much doing a 10-20% water change.

I wouldnt add water directly from just the hot tap. With regards to the dechlorinator. I turn my filter off, add the dechlorinator to the tank then add the water. I then give it a few minutes and turn teh filter back on. Decholorinator though does apprently work instantly so there really is no need to turn the filter off either (I do it from force of habit mainly).

It is certainly a LOT easier then using buckets :) Makes a quite labour intensive job into something you can do in 5-10 minutes max.
