As a general rule you should probably clean your filter as far away as possible to your water changes to minimize the loss of beneficial bacteria.

Don't clean your filter with every water change either. Your filter should only be cleaned when necessary. ie. when the dirt starts to restrict the flow through the filter.

Also remember, never wash your filter media under the tap, always wash it in water from your tank.

Sorry if you knew that already. :good:

I do a water change every week and about once a month I'll rinse off the filter media (in tank water of course) and take the filter apart and clean all the parts really good. The day after I do that the water in tank is like crystal clear.

I always clean my filter floss with every water change (unless I am replacing the floss) and always rinse it under the tap. My floss is there for purely mechanical filtration and just rinsing in tap water would never get it clean.
