does anybody elses fish go mad after a water change?
like i did mine today and just after i topped up the tank, my harlequins will decide that they want to swim continuously up and down a corner of the tank, from top to bottom, for a long time.

is this normal, or am i doing something wrong :( ? (cant possibly think what im doing wrong if i am, i make sure the water is always warm and as close to my tank temp as possible dechlorinator is always added too)

My corys react to a waterchange more than any other fish :B

Mine get all excited even while I am draining the water. Everyone goes out to check what's up. I am not sure why they'd be racing around afterwards but for corys it's certainly normal and my clown loaches tend to do that too. I always think it's because I do large 50% water changes.  A big enough water change and possibly the tap water sometimes coming out different can stress them a bit but I've been doing so for a long time and never had a problem or subsequent problem although I've seen them race up and down afterwards too.

My fish do it too... I don't know why, but they don't seem to have any ill effects... So I just consider it playfulness, and happiness.

Topping off isn't really doing a water change...

But I swear my gourami hate WC day. They'll be huddled together behind some plants or behind the heater if the water's that high for a few hours.

dreamertk i meant after id done the water change :p and i was putting the last of the water in lol, should have made it clear :)

well im glad to find out its nothing bad, i thought possibly i had been doing something wrong, my fish get all excited when i drain the water too :') everyone comes out to investigate, see i heard somewhere that when the fish are swimming up and down the glass it means theyre trying to get out or to a different body of water, probably because they're not happy with what they're in, but i think i may have been overthinking that a bit, they're fine now :D

I knew you were smarter than that.

Sounds like your fish are fine!

yeeeeeeah ;)! i think they are all well, got some new fish today too. asian stone catfish :) they're tiny and great at camoflauging themselves! but they look fab :)

I did a bigger-than-i-meant-to water change on Thursday and I swear, yesterday the rainbows were coloured up more than I'd ever seen them before! Sometimes I think they just enjoy the fresh water so much they go a bit loopy but keep an eye on them - I have heard stories of rare occasions where water companies have changed the levels of this or that and unsuspecting aquarists have done large water changes that have been fatal.
