As far as my knowledge goes...
Mix your salt/water to the specific s.g.. make sure you have enough to do the partial. If you take 3 gal. out, put 3 gal. in. I reccomend taking a 5 galleon bucket and drawing a line on the outside of it for the exact amount you need to take out. Never use the dirty water bucket to mix your new salt water in. NEVER WALK AWAY WHILE SIPHONING WATER OUT OF YOUR TANK! Also, one more thing that's very very important... NEVER USE TAP WATER FOR SW AQUARIUMS!!!!!
If you need to top off your water because of evaporation,... make sure you use fresh water that's not from the tap.
Good luck.

Is geezer's a saltwater tank? He posted in freshwater?
Geezer, I think it's partly about practice makes perfect. It's one of those things that get easier and easier. Also, I find it saves times if you pause the suction by putting your thumb on the bucket end of the the pipe every time you move the hoover any distance in the tank. You may also want to concentrate on careful hoovering of one end of the tank eevery week, and just take the grossest bits of the rest.
