They drive off CO2 that is a valuable plant nutrient. Lighting is the most essential component to a planted tank. How much you have determines what plants you can and can't grow. Low light = lower maintenance and cost but restriction on plant choice. High light = higher maintenance and cost but less restriction on plant choice. The pinned threads are a good place to start.
