Wat should i do with my 12gal.

At the mo i have 2 honey gouramis and a few cories

But i was wondering what i should get for it as well.

Ive had my eyes on 3 things...

1. the chocolate gouramis and frail gouramis.. and yes i know what looking after they'll need.

2. Dwarf cichlid (nannacara anomala) a saw a beautiful dark brown female in my shop.. whether shes stil there is another thing but still...

3. This is unlikely... very... a 12 " spiny eel... it only stays at 12" so i got nothin to worry bout

4 oh and theres a four.. i wanted to breed my upside down catfish

can anyone help me decide???????

Hi Vixen,

Chocolate gouramis are nice but as you know do tend to be a bit delicate.
I have also had and bred the nannacara anomola which are interesting little cichlids.
I presume the tank is a standard 2 foot tank (60cm). Why not have a tank with loads of smaller fish in it. Say your honeys, cardinals, rummy noses, your corrys and syno, hatchet fish, a pair of dwarf cichlids (apisto's), or a pair of killies. If you want something a little bigger say some congo tetras.
Do you have loads of plants in the tank? These would set the fish off if you did and give them some retreat.
Did I notice you live in London? You have some good shops down there with choice. I am a fan of Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnal Green and of Wildwoods in Enfield.
If i were you i would kick the eel into touch as well as breeding your syno cats as it is not really worth it. Please dont take offence by that comment as none is intended. If you are intending breeding stuff I would tend to make it more worthwile with something that the young will be worth something. Thats what I do.
Have you got more than the one tank?

Cheers

i got two tanks.. and funny enough i work at WILDWOODS :p whats the chances of that!!!

dont the nannacaras only grow to 4" ??? which isnt big?

im gettin all my new plants on sunday ... the day i work.. so ill be helping myself to the stock at wildwoods lol.

I agree with fishman for the most part about the smaller additions or some larger tetras and the like... but would say that if you realy want to you should try breeding the upside down cats. You may not succeed or make any money off it but it might be worth a try just for the experience and the possible chance of seeing your own home-bred fish grow up.
I know nothing about the dwarf cichlid (nannacara) you mentioned but it may be worth it.
I also wouldn't go for the chocolates or ctenops nobilis though. As I've probably already told you some thousand times :p
You could try sparkling, croaking, dwarf, thick-lipped, banded/striped/giant/indian (colisa fasciata) or possibly even pearl gouramies as well but you could only fit a single one of the larger species or a couple of the much smaller ones. They are all generaly peaceful so should be ok with your honeys. The smaller ones (excluding dwarfs which are often sickly) would be best suited to your aquarium due to size and a peaceful nature.

edit: Wanted to make it clearer (as cometcattle indirectly pointed out it wasn't - thanks :) ) that the larger gourami species I mentioned would only do well if on their own, with the upper layers to themselves, and that the much smaller species are better suited to this tank.

in that case lol, i might go for the nannacaras then... maybe go for a few females and possibly a single male.. but he might be aggressive...

could i have apistos double reds in with them? or rams?

I'd say no. You don't want to put that many cichlids in a 2' tank. There's not enough room for them to establish territory.

Also, I would not put congo tetras in a 12g tank. IMO, it's too small for a school to swim comfortably. I saw giant gourami and pearl gourami mentioned. I'd never put either of those in a 12g. -_-

We are talking about a 12g tank right? :dunno:

When I said giant gourami I didn't mean the 24" osphronemus gourami (in case you thought so)... I meant the small colisa species. Either those or pearls would be fine ALONE in the tank (as in no other top dwellers). I think I already said that though. They aren't particularly active so they would be ok provided they ahd the top layers to themselves. I also thought I made it pretty clear that the smaller species were better suited to that size tank - the dwarfs in particular I think is what I said.

I agree that all those cichlids would be too much for your tank.
