had 1 site suggest that it could be the knife fish if it haddent had enougth live food ?

OK the knife fish is seeming like the most likely culprit at this moment in time. here's some more info on this species as you can see the fish is going to get waaay too big for the tank, you need close to 300 litres to keep one. The hunt at night time so you would be unlikely to see the attacks which seems in keeping with what you describe, if it was the keyholes you would be likely to see signs of aggression so it leads me to believe that they are not the culprit.

as the knife fish is going to get too big for the tank anyway i would advise you to re-home him and see if the attacks stop.

I think your overstocked to be fair, that may be the cause of it....
Try asking on Oddballs what size tank they need but i think its 90 u.s gal at a minimum, they'll get 16"-20" long in the correct conditions.
They are more likely to hunt tankmates if hungry but as with any fish you can't speculate an indiidual fishes behaviour just go on the general consensus.
Wiggles you taught me everything i know :-( , no bit tired, was on till 4am, GF not impressed
Edited to add; sorry GF just growled at me that it was actually 5am....
Get the door widened, you deserve it :p

while there's too many fish in the tank and on full adult size it'll be overstocked, i wouldn't envisage it causing problems based on the current size of the fish.

Wiggles you taught me everything i know :-( , no bit tired really trying to avoid responsibility, was on till 4am, GF not impressed
