nutrafin do a product called waste control which claims to break down excess food and organic matter, thus keeping pollutants to a minimum, does anyone have any opinions on this as it sounds helpful but i'm thinking it could starve the bacteria.

any ideas anyone?

if u use that stuff, wouldnt you have to keep using it all the time, then you'd be spending lots of money to dump lots of chemicals into your tank?

I wouldn't use it; are you cycling a tank or want to use it to help water quality problems?
If you're cycling a tank with fish or have a new tank/want to sort out water quality problems it isn't worth it as you can easily achieve a good bacterial ecosytem in time in your filters that will be able to cope with tank waste, unless the tank is overstocked etc.
Why are you considering using it?

I don't think it's chemical, I would assume it's bacteria... usually fine to add anytime unless you're having a bacterial bloom.
I haven't had any experience with that particular brand tho, so I wouldn't know.

If you have a set-up fish tank already, and do not have any trouble with water params like nitrates and nitrites i would leave it alone. Your tank will reach equilibrium or somewhere near it once it settles down and cycles. I really dont think it is neccessary.

not cycling anymore and a bit understocked now but just looking out of curiousity! what part of somerset you from Tokis-Phoenix?!

I used to use this when i kept goldfish...... and it didn't work anyway but kept using it for some strange reason lol.

Also someone on a another forum did some research into it i think and found out that it CAN cause ammonia/nitrIte spikes or something.
