Well, as some of you might know, this filter does not come with a top. I didn't think anything of it until I came home today and found my little girl had jumped into it had died. So, I'll be working on a way to cover it, but for those that do use it, either try to keep it higher than 1 inch above the water for the ouput flow or if you know of a way to fix this, please let me know.

Oh Sandi I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl :-(

I don't have one of these filters but good that you can warn other users

one time my filter on my guppys tank the intake tube fell off and killed alot of my yellows, like 20 at least. so be carefull those are dangerous. i was mad. and now im tired so sorry for the incorrect grammer.

There's a scary thought... I'm moving two of my guys into a 10 gallon with that filter (they will be seperated lol... chill) you figure I should just go buy another one?

i don't own this filter, I've only see the marketing pictures of it, but it looks to me like maybe you could put a piece of plastic wrap or some other pliable material like that over the opening and hold it shut with a rubber band.

I can't tell if this would really work from the image, but it sounds good in theory. Sorry about your fish :/

Right now I'm working with some of that plastic mesh used for dividers to look at ways of making it safer... Thistle was an energetic little thing, it just never occured to me that she might jump. The intakes on it are too small for a betta to fit through, being maybe the same width as a quarter's edge... If I can't get the Plastic Divider stuff to work I was thinking of trying either a nylon (?)stocking or I saw a DIY filter material that used the mesh from those body poofs you can buy for in the shower?

you know, these things? Basicly if they're new the person said just rinse them for any dust... I'm gonna pick one up on the way home and try it, since the plastic last night wasn't folding quite right and I was having trouble getting it to stay on.

EDIT: Or I could try the seran wrap... I'll see what I get worked out when I get home.

I have filter like that one but it's made for 15-30 gallon aquariums. I needed to decrease the current coming out of it so I cut up a plastic soda bottle and basically put it on the top of the filter so I have a decent top to it and it killed alot of the current coming out of it.

This page explains it better.

I've done that with some of my HOB filters, The thing is this filter doesn't have a lid that the plastic can be taped to... Where did you attatch the soda bottle at and or how did you attach it? :shifty:

The soda bottle(just a regular one like in that link) I had was able to basically latch on to the back of the aquarium. I haven't had to use any tape or anything. It just stays in place all by itself.

 sorry about your little girl.
On a brighter note, years ago when my kids were small we had fish tanks everywhere and I used to have a really cheap filter fitted into a corner and the water flowed through wool stuff..small gap in bottom of it supposed to put charcoal in but I used to run out. We had lots of baby guppies we kept in this tank but they died off bit by bit when we cleaned the tank out found 2 or 3 guppies living quite happily in space in the filter..had their own private quarters. and they were quite big.
