It has a powerhead and I wonder if the sand will get sucked into it. However, these are advertised as marine and FW tanks and obviously those with a marine set up are going to be using sand, so can anyone shed any light on this - do I need to put a ring of stone around the powerhead inlet so the sand isn't butt up to it?

How low is the inlet? It is quite unusual to have it so low it will pick up the substrate.

I have 2 externals running in my tank, both inlets are about 1-2 inch above the sand and it is no problems.

Tis quite low yes, in both tanks, tried to give you an idea in the pic but it sits on top about an inch worth of gravel

I have this tank and use sand. Just cut off a bit of the pipe so it doesn't 'sit' so low in the tank. Mine didn't pick up any sand and still worked fine. You can just pull off the bottom bit, cut the tube and push the bottom bit on again. Sorted! :good:
