Want to get cichlids...

my fiance want to put cichlids in our 20 gallon tank. He is really excited about that. Any advice.

Are there fish in there already? If so, think about stocking levels. Your tank isn't that big so go for 'dwarf' species such as Apistogramma or Nannacara that would coexist with typical community fish. What fish do you already have?

Yeah, we know we would have to go with the ones that are not much bigger than 4 inches. And only about 3 in the whole tank. He wants colorful fish with a lot of personality. Ones that will interact with one another or greet us when we come home. Right now we only have a betta in his own tiny tank. Not even a half gallon. But he is so happy. We recently put up our 20 gallon tank. We want to add some fish to test the bacteria levels and things but are unsure when we can do that.

Tiffany, gouramis are a nice peaceful colorful alternative to cichlids. Are you planning to house your betta in the 20gal?

That would be nice but he is pretty aggressive. I would not want to kill him or the other fish. We have had him for almost a year now. And would hate for anything bad to happen.
