I'm really new to plants in aquariums. I used to have an amazon sword, a red melon sword, and moneywort in an old aquarium, but they didn't do too well since I had very low light. I really want to try again because I think planted tanks are amazing, and I hate the look of fake plants, but am starting a new SA tank that will need plants.

So right now I'm basically clueless. So this needs to be super simple (I also don't get sciency stuff...cycvling makes no sense to me so I always have to seed my aquariums from already cycled tanks).

I have a 20g tank. It will have apistos in it, but right now it just has a couple of black phantom tetras in it and a twig catfish. It has the hood it came with, I don'tfeel like replacing the lighting right now, but most likely will in the future when I have some money and decide that I am getting okay at growing plants. I have root tabs left over fom my old plants, I figre I'll use them (I think they're seachem flourish?). I know I have liquid fertilizer around somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look so I guess I'll buy some new stuff if I need too. I'm perfectly willing to set up DIY CO2. Looks easy enough, at least.

I'm pretty picky about plants. I don't like any that look wrinky or aren't green.

The plants I'm currently planning on having are Java Ferns (I don't really like them, but they seem easy to grow and easy to find), Anubias Nana, Dwarf anubias, hornwort (I love the look of this one!), and dwarf hygros.

I'd really like to have Thai Onion Plants, dwarf sags, Cryptocoryne spiralis, and Cryptocoryne xWillisII "lucens", but are these plants hard to find and will they work in my tank?

I need ideas for a foreground plant, too. I love riccia, but it won't work in my tank, will it? Not a fan of Java moss, but if its my only option I'll do it. I LOVE the look of Bacopa Ausralis, but wil lthat work in my tank and it will it be easy to find? How do I make these plants grow in as a floor instead of on rocks and driftwood?

How do you cut a rhizome and what does one look like?

Will this look good in my tank, or should I just use my next paycheck on getting a nice light and growing cool plants like everyone else?

Anyone have any good pictures of nice low-light tanks?

Should I actually do the CO2?

What substrate sould I use? Its currently a mix of sand/gravel. Sould it just be one or the other? Or should I use flourite?

Sorry about all the questions...I'm definitely a plant newb.

well im no expert, but ive read that the more light you have the more co2 youll need. i guess what im saying is the first thing you do for your plants should be better lighting, without it your plants cant grow and wont need ferts and co2. get the lights, then get the ferts, then go with co2 :)

without blowing my own trumpet too much i had a great low light (1.3WPG) planted 50G cube tank a while ago. the journal is in my sig below. well worth a read if your interested in setting up a simmillar tank.

Don't worry Jimbooo, a great tank is worth tooting your horn for. I'll toot away too. In my signature, Briielzebub, you'll find the links to four, lower light tank journals, ranging from a structured Dutch layout to jungle scapes. In addition, I have a link to a list of easy to care for plants. Coralife makes a fixture, about $34 that consists of 2 14W T5 fluorescent bulbs (28W total). This will give you 1.4WPG and can grow quite a few things.

You may also PM me with questions.
