ive been eyeing this giant oscar at the lfs for a while.
i have never kept any sort of cichlid so i know nothing about them.
what size tank would i need for an approximately 8 or 9 inch oscar? is a 55 too small? (im guessing yes)
should he be kept by himself?
also there are plastic plants in with him at the lfs and he seems to enjoy digging them up and playing with them. i guess that means a minimalist tank when it comes to deco...

excuse my ignorance-i havent done much info yet...

yes a 55 is too small, for just the single oscar 75 gallons min. if you want to get him a playmate going to need a bigger tank, and make sure that the new friend doesn't fit in his mouth. but those are pretty much the general rules with O's

Plants are pretty pointless when it comes to oscars; they will be annahilated. Just get a deep layer of gravel (about 3") for him to dig and play in, and a piece of pipe or tubing for him to hide in when he wants. Maybe some rocks for a decorative effect.

yep, deff. cant keep him in a 55 gal

if you want him with friends you need a 100 gal and maybe you can have a Jack Dempsy

I have an Oscar and he destroys anything in the tank that takes his fancy so plants are pointless. It is best to get fine gravel or sand for them as they like to dig and can scratch or hurt themselves if the gravel is not the fine sort.

I heard somewhere that a ping pong ball is good (not dyed!) as they play with them alot??
