I went to WalMart last night. I normally look the other way if I have to walk by the Aquatics Section. But, there was a woman bending down to look at one of the lower tanks.....and well.....I had a moment of weakness. Low riding jeans and thongs should be banned!

There were roughly 12 tanks.....six on the bottom and six on the top. None of them had gravel or any kind of ornamentation at all. One tank was so jam-packed with Neons you could walk across the top of the water if you were small enough....literally. The bottom looked like it was covered in gravel....but upon closer inspection, it was nothing more than a substrate of Neon bodies. How can a company the size of WalMart let this happen? Come on, I would work there for free a couple hours a week just to save the poor fish.

The rest of the tanks at the store were in the same sad state of disrepair. An elderly woman, obviously oblivious to fishkeeping but sweet and kind as my Grandmother, used a tiny net and scooped some Goldfish out for the lady I mentioned before. She scooped out soooo many. Three or four of them fell on the floor.....she didn't pick them up until after she bagged the rest and sent the woman on her way.

Anyone else care to share a WalMart horror story?

First off i would call 1-800-walmart and complain. Our store actually has a really good guy who takes care of the fish. But he is also a fish owner so that probably helps. He has put up pictures of his tank in the fish department and boy i wish i could grow plants like his in my tank. Anyway my main complaint about walmart's fish section is they have few items i need and there are no other pet stores in my town.

There is a chain store where I am.. I would say thats its just as bad. I go there often to show serenity the rabbits and the hamsters but no way would I buy fish from there. ever tank has bodies in it, they dont have a quarantine tank and they have there bettas in every tank flaring at eachother as they are near to eachother. I always look at the fish though and this man wanted 2 bettas. the woman she must have been 15 said yes of course the delivery is coming in now.. she went out the back took 2 bags out of a packed polly box and gave them to him.. £3.99 each straight out of the delivery bag and the man cought them.. I wanted to say something but I couldnt..
then a little girl has her hand in the large molly tank swishing it all about and nobody did a thing.. it was horrible..

they have salt water and tropical in there and those poor fish I would say about 500 platys in a 1ftx1ftx1ft tank and the same with neons but about 2000 of them and guppys and all sorts :( its such a shame.

The Walmart near me is horrible. They only have goldfish, mollies, and some tetras, and everyone of them is covered in ich. 3 times i've been in there and everyone always has ich. Poor fish.

Everyone knows that Walmart is horrible for fish care. Not to be rude but don't complain about it on the forum, do something about it or leave it alone. Sorry that still sounded rude, not meant to be. I don't think that names of stores should be used in the forum, there is another forum that will not allow names be allowed at all. You have to becareful about that, maybe someone from that store sees it then it may cause problems for the forum. My opinion.

my wal mert though is coming around alot better.they hired 2 new women to work there whp own a few tanks.first thing they did was put gravel in the bottoms.next they wrote up the information rather accuratly on all the fish.(tank size, aggrestion, community or not...)now i have no problems buying from walmart.actually it has never been too bad.but not the greatest.

All that needs to be said about my local Walmart is green spotted puffers + African clawed frogs. Did someone say eyeless froggies?

mine takes very good care of the fish and there barely ever are fish because people buy them up fast. my only complaint is the bettas-half are dead. i love female bettas and i watched them bring a bunch in and a few were dead. i quickly spotted a very small probly 1 month old female betta that looked healthy so i bought it. and they have only a quarter of an inch of water in ti so half sufficate ! :X

the one near me is good

they take good care of the fish nd they have a good selection containing
various cichlids, tetras, corys, sharks, barbs, etc.

screw walmart, did you get a picture of the woman? just kidding

How can a company the size of WalMart let this happen? Come on, I would work there for free a couple hours a week just to save the poor fish.

well, thats their problem. the company is so rich that it doesnt matter if the fish in their fish section die. you can probably work there for free if you talk to the manager. i think he will be willing to let you clean it since it will make his merchandise more appealing

They should really just stick to selling aquarium hardware instead of livestock, they're really bad at keeping fish in a healthy condition. But once in a blue moon, they have a nice clean tank with healthy fish.
