Do any of you ever buy fish from Wal-Mart or Meijer? Are their fish healthy? Tanks clean? I usually try to stay away from them, because most of them around here are not to great. One of the Wal-Marts near me just hired a guy that used to work at a local FS. He really takes care of their aquariums! The first time I saw him there he had a Python out and was cleaning all of the tanks. I just wish all of the other Department stores that decide to sell fish would hire someone to actually take care of them! I have since bought a few fish there and they are as healthy as any of my others. While I was out Christmas shopping today I ended up in a Meijer store. I went back to their fish and had tears in my eyes. 8 dead Betta's in cups! 2 or 3 had a nasty yellow water with mold growing on the surface! They had about 25 or so aquariums set-up and every one had atleast 4 or 5 dead fish in it. Not to mention the skeletons of others. They had one tank full of Clown Loaches and I would say 90% had Ich. I walked back there several times, but there was never anybody around to complain to. The isle stunk to high heaven to. I mean if you cant take care of the fish then why even bother to sell them?

Sorry for the book, but it really bothered me to see all those dead and uncared for fish! :rip:

It really depends n their supplier . thats where they will pick up alot of diseases.i have bought african cichlids in Wal-mart just because they mislabeled them they were 99 cents.and they had a large selection .they had them marked as assorted cichlid pretty good deal i might say.in petstore they would go for up to 20 dollars each.its worth atry at a dollar.i had no problem with my fish they seem healthy.as long as you acclimate your fish and run your temperture alittle high there seems to be no ich.i use a little aquarium salt i keeps everything else at bay like finrot and fungus

A lot of people really dislike Walmart's fish, and in most cases they are absolutely right. But it really depends on your particular Walmart. One of the ones near me, they don't even have a dedicated person assigned to the whole pet department. It really looks like they don't care that much about selling their fish, and their caring and knowledge generally ends at feeding them.

Just go to Walmart and look at the tanks. If you see dead fish at the bottom, don't buy from there. Talk to the person who would be getting the fish for you. See if they know anything, ask them about how they take care of the fish. It all comes down to the feel you get.

I've only bought three fish from Walmart, and those were my first fish aside from your standard goldfish. I bought 3 zebra Danios, and never had a problem with disease or Ich with them. Maybe I was just lucky.

Good luck to you.

My Wal-Mart is great about fish and always have clean healthy bettas. They get good variety too. Lots of rare or uncommon betta types and colors.

$20, for crossbreeds? I think you need to find a new fish store.

What do you mean crossbreeds? Wal-mart doesn't sell crossbreeds. I got two auratus there, a red zebra, and a peacock. They also sell chipokee and pure ob peacocks. There are a few others they sell too but I didn't look at them close enough to figure out what kind.

They also keep all of the fish in proper order and don't mix cichids with tetras like most Wal-Marts. I like mine. It's really clean. I always make sure the fish guy does it though because someone else from the nearest department came over once and I asked for some otos and she was like, what's an oto? And she dropped one on the floor. I got 2 bags of four otos. The one the fish guy did all lived and the one the lady from the other department did 3 out of 4 died. So I think it all depends on the person running that section of the store.

My Wal-Mart doesnt really take care of their fish. Yeah, the tanks are pretty clean but most of the fish are dead. :-( The Betta's are in small cups w/ just alittle bit of water, some are dead..with yellow water and mold. I got a pregnant molly from there last week, after having babies she died  all 30 babies died too. Then a couple days ago, I got a blue gourami...I woke up this morning and it was dead. I dont think I will be buying fish from Wal-Mart anymore
