One of my oldest Sawbwa barb males. Currently in a 90L planted tank alongside 10 other Sawbwa. Fish is around 3-4 years old now and is the current sparring champion among the males:big_boss:

This is one of my female cherry barbs who was blinded 5 years ago due to a tank contamination event. She is currently 8 years old as of this post and still going strong.
She doesn't have a name, but she's easily recognizable by her pectoral fin defect (it's a nub, always has been).

She, and her other blind barb companions, is a very adaptable, tough fish who have repeatedly reminded me of how resilient fish can be. Despite being blind, she and her companions are able to find food well, often dining with the pangio loaches off the bottom of the tank. They seem to know when food is present because the other fish with them go into a frenzy to sniff out the food and they often start pecking at the bottom where the most activity is. I often like to joke and call the loaches their "seeing eye fish".

Cherry barbs are underrated fish for most communities, provided tankmates are chosen with care, gender ratios are carefully chosen, and temperature is within their range. They prefer cooler temperatures, 68-77F being their ideal range. They are adaptable with a wide range of pH and GH needs and are more docile than many barbs. Males may still target the fins of corydoras, so this combination may need to be avoided. Females are the more mellow of the two sexes and are still bright and colorful in their own right, despite not being the ruby red of the males.

While I probably won't get them again any time soon due to wanting to pursue other fish options, I cannot recommend these guys enough for anyone wanting a good sturdy fish for a planted setup or even a biotope setup.

This is my green platinum tiger barb. He is king of the tank. I had bought him along with others back in 2023 but he is only one that made it. Since then I've added four regular tiger barbs and a couple yoyo loaches and they've all done well together. This is in a 10 gallon tank which has been running since 2022.

This is one of my Dawkinsia apsara ( Mascara barbs ) this is the most colorful male right now, still a juvenile... he's about 5 inches long, and is in a cool water, mixed barb tank... sorry for the spotty glass, but this vintage 55 gallon tank is built into my shower wall...

I guess I'm next.
Cherry Barb.jpg

Here is a female Cherry Barb.
She currently lives in a heavily planted 20 high. She is nearing 4 years old and is still going strong.
Mine actually happens to be blind in one eye.(not the eye in the picture)
She feasts daily on Bug Bites and brine shrimp and spends her days in a planted paradise. I'm almost jealous.
These are a very peaceful fish. I have not noticed any bullying among themselves, or other tank mates.

Padamya barbs. Also known as Odessa barbs, but I think the local name, Padamya, suits them much better. They come from northern Myanmar (and possibly southern China), nowhere near Odessa, which is where they first appeared in the aquarium trade. Did you know that their scientific name, "Padamya," means "ruby" in the Burmese language? So that is what I call them. Padamya barbs. They really do grace the tank like living rubies.

At last count I have around three males and four females in my 55 gallon tank. They don't school but constantly interact with each other. They are fairly peaceful as long as they have room to spread out. I've been noticing some chasing and shyness lately, which usually means I need to get a few more. They live with a big school of choprae danios (including the one photo bombing an otherwise rather nice picture), hillstream loaches, sand loaches, a fire belly toad, and assorted inverts in a foothills stream paludarium.

Really beautiful fish but stinking difficult to get a picture of them! 💕
