I have seen tanks with sand over the substrate, but has anyone ever hear of someone using volcanic sand as your top layer? I wonder if it would be better/easier for plants to thrive, plus it's black sand...lol...which is really cool. Would go well in a nice mahogony or cherry stand.

So long as it is calcium free then volcanic sand would make a very good substrate. Eco-complete is of volcanic origin, it's just processed.
