Fish don't have eye lids, in the natural world, light comes slow, in the tank it just come on, do you think this effects them in anyway, my question is........should we have lights that come on slowly? And go off slowly.........what does your lighting do......

My light is the basic on/off light, but i try to at least have the room lights on for a bit before/after i turn on/off the lights on the tank... i'm not comfortable just turning on/off the lights otherwise!

Staged lighting (ie. dawnlight through windows before tank lights come on, then tank lights off and room lights still on, then room lights off) is the best most people can manage.

More advanced lighting systems such as LED's are dimmable and programmable to simulate proper day/night cycles but the majority have non-dimmable lights (T8/T5/MH) so have to follow a staged system.

I would never advise having a fishtank go from virtual darkness to full tank lights as the fish will get stressed.

Thanks mislisa and Aquascaper,a lot of good info there.........
