Hi, new to the forum and relatively new to keeping tropical fish and my Platys are exhibiting some strange behaviour...

I started off with 3 male and 1 female who successfully gave birth to 3 babies. The female recently died and now the remaining males are persistently fighting. I bought a breeding net to 'quarantine' the worst offender for a few days but he is still fighting.

Do they need a woman in their lives - is that what's causing them to fight? Not sure if it's related, but the most violent of the Platys seems to have white lips (never noticed this before!)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Could you describe the behavior? Could they perhaps be attempting to mate with each other, despite being all males.

first they were fighting over the one and unfortunaty, only female
sencond if you have 1 male 2 females; 2 males 4 females; 3 males 6 females;4 males 8 females
3rd the female died of harrasment
what im trying to say is that for every 1 male you have , have 2 females

Keeping a female platy with three males is cruel. Obviously, you didn't know this as you were new to keeping fish.

Everyone has to start somewhere, but your LFS should have really told you to have more females than males. :(

Completely agree, and this is pretty standard practice. Shame that the store didn't tell capegler this.

No worries, Madam :)

It's always sad to hear people getting bad advice from LFS's.

I've had it myself and am very grateful to these forums for helping me out when I was very new to it all.

You get experienced people from all over the world helping you. This place is really your first port of call before you consider starting a tank. :)
