has anyone known of a male platy to be a fish killer...? i bought two red platies (1m/1f) and a female betta three days ago. i had them in quarantine together, everyone looked pretty good. but i found the betta dead this morning! there weren't any indications on her of disease and the body was perfect (just very dead). however, i had seen the male platy take a couple of swipes at her yesterday, and it looks like the female is avoiding the male...

i checked the water conditions, nitrates are a little high but no other problems. has anyone else had an experience along these lines?

(i have to say, i'm surprised that the betta bought it--she was the only one with complete fins in the 5g colony i rescued her from. i was more afraid of her beating up the platies!)

I doubt it was the platy, could of been stress due to the move, how high are your nitrates.

If she was the only one that had her fins intact, then she was already exposed to something, and the stress of the move killed her. :-( The Platty was picking on her because she was ill, but he did not kill her.

Sorry for your loss. :byebye:

my platys killed my betta(helped by the 2 huge aggreesive catfish) but if there was no sighns of nipping it proberbly wasnt them

yeah, no damage to see and no symptoms either. :dunno: all i could think of was the platy. she was swimming and eating well, up until i found her this morning. i heard something dash against the gravel last night in the dark... maybe she darted into the ground and concussed herself. a betta can drown...

the other betta girls didn't have damaged fins from disease, they were all beaten-up from fighting. i watched two or three little battles just while i was trying to decide who i could rescue. i figured that if i pulled out the biggest and the baddest of them all, maybe i could reduce the pressure in there. :/ i'm not set-up to be a hospital, but i did what i could.

but yeah, no sign of nipping. the carcass even still had its eyeballs (always the first thing to go).

nitrates are at about 20... i emptied out all but maybe a pint of water before adding the fish, so its as low as they'll go.
