Hi! We got a new black moore goldfish (Speedie) this past Mon evening (16th). She was put in a 10-gal quarantine tank. That tank had been in use for 6 months so it was an established tank. All levels were checked with an API test kit and everything looked good. FYI-The tank contains an Internal Whisper Filter rated for 30-gal, an airstone and a new live plant that was purchased when she was. (Moved the former black moore goldfish to a 30-gallon on Sun 15th.) She's only 3-4" long from head to end of tail. At the store, we noticed that her fins were down. The guy at the pet store said that "they do that". Swimmey (first goldfish) never does that.

Tuesday morning (17th), I noticed that Speedie was just sitting on the bottom of the tank. I did the unthinkable and tapped on the glass bc I thought she was dead. She moved, okay good -- not dead. That evening, we noticed some white spots on her. I feared it was Ich. :( I had some leftover Furan-2 (expires April 2009) from when Swimmey (first goldfish) had a fungus infection and read that it can treat Ich so I immediately started treatment and followed the directions. Last night was her third treatment and she was still covered in white spots. I slowly increased the temperature of the tank from 70-F to 73-F. Overnight, the tank temperature increased to 75-F due to the heat in the apartment. This morning, she had a few less white spots and I increased the temperature of the tank to 77-F. I plan to increase to 80-F when I return this evening. Tonight is supposed to be the final night of the Furan-2 treatment but, clearly she needs more! Not sure what to do. Should I continue with the Furan-2 or get something else specific for Ich? Of course, my son is already attached so I'm hoping to keep her alive! Any suggestions on the best meds and course of action would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance! :)

(we live in NY, USA.)

p.s. -- yes, i know keeping a goldfish in a 10-gallon tank long term is a bad idea. Swimmey (the first fish) was a surprise for my son, presented in a "goldfish" bowl. i was not thrilled with the surprise. they really should change the name of those bowls! I quickly learned that those bowls were no good as Swimmey got the fungus infection bc of his poor water conditions in the bowl. within 2 days, i had a 2-gallon tank with a filteration system and the following week, got the 10-gallon tank as a temporary home. he was really small (about 3") and i needed time and money to get the right supplies, plus the new tank needed to be established before he moved over. i changed the water often and he made it! :)

UPDATE (posted on post #4 but for someone who hasn't read this yet, thought this would be easier):

Just found the sticky:

Tank size: 10-gallon quarantine. it contains a 15-gal rated (or 10-gal rated) air pump with a 6" airstone, a live plant and a whisper internal 30-gal filter. NOTE: THIS IS A NEWLY ACQUIRED FISH, SHE'S IN QUARNTINE -- NOT PERMANENT HOME.

FROM MON Feb 16
pH: ~6.8
ammonia: 0
nitrite: either 0 or 20 (dont remember whether ist the "ite" or "ate" that was zero. the most lethal one was 0.)
nitrate: either 0 or 20 (dont remember whether ist the "ite" or "ate" that was zero. the most lethal one was 0.)
kH: don't know
gH: don't know
tank temp: currently 78-F

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): white spots all over body, likes to hang out underneath filter, keeps fins down

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% after 48-hrs meds and 60-hrs after meds (per medication instructions)

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:
biological filter. tank been was in use for 6-months by a different goldfish. StressZyme, Sea Salt, Water Conditioner and Furan-2

Tank inhabitants: 1 black moore goldfish (about 3-4" from head to toe)

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): young black moore goldfish and a plant

Exposure to chemicals: same as chemical additives. StressZyme, Sea Salt, Water Conditioner and Furan-2

Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How many fish and which type.
Is the goldifsh still in the 10 gallon tank on its own.

Follow med instuctions to see if you have to do a water change and run some black carbon before you can dose again.
Does the furan treat whitespot.
Also you raise temp to 30 and increase aeration in the tank because of the high temp and med reduces 02 in the water.

hi!

i don't remember precisely as the last readings were on monday. on saturday, the ammonia was a little high and i got it down to zero by monday with several water changes and gravel cleaning. pH was at 6.8. either nitrate or nitrite was at zero around 20, i think. (the most lethal one was at zero, i get them mixed up so cannot tell you off-hand which was which, the levels were safe.) all the water levels checked out good. i can take another reading this evening. :)

a water change was required after 48-hrs which was last night (yes, i did it). another water change is required tonight (which i will do). tmrw, i'm supposed to do another water change and not add more meds. i don't think the ich will be gone, though. :(

i am in the process of raising the temperature to 80-F (26.7-C) . note to self: 30-C is 86-F

i have an airpump that's rated up to 15-gal (might be 10-gal but i think its 15-gal) with an airstone in there. is that not sufficient?

the goldfish is all by herself in the 10-gallon tank as its the quarantine tank. she'll be moved to the 30-gallon tank with one other goldfish when she's healthy.

what's the best course of action and medication for her? :)

That's fine then.
I would run some black carbon for half aday and then start the treatment again.

Its quite rare to have a nitrate reading of 0.
You can have reading of 0 if the tap nitrate reading is 0 and you have live plants in the tank.
Also you need double filteration with goldfish as they are massive waste producers.

okay! is the black carbon to prevent overmedicating?

then its probably the nitrite thats the zero. i'm not with the kit so i cannot look.

re: ((Also you need double filteration with goldfish as they are massive waste producers.)) i know. this is the hospital/sick tank. plus, the filter is rated for a 30-gallon tank.

what about the 15-gal (or 10-gal) air pump with 6" stone, though? is that enough since she's getting meds and a higher temp?

Its in the main tank that they need the double filter.
You need to get the med out of the tank with the black carbon before you add the other round of meds, as you can overdose.
Good Luck.

Should I get a different medication? If so, what is best?

Yes, I know. :) The main tank has a filter that is rated for 40-gal (even though its a 30-gal tank) and will be getting the 30-gal filter from the 10-gal tank when the new fish moves in. So I'll have filtration for a 70-gal tank in a 30-gal tank (more than double).

Thats fine then.
What med are you using. You didn't rise temp as that speeds the life cycle up and that's why the med hasn't been so effective first time round.

i am using Furan-2.

Furan 2 a bacterial med not whitespot med.
You need to buy a whitespot med fast.

Get the bacterial med out of the tank with a water change and black carbon.
Run the black carbon for half aday then add the whitespot med.
You need to get treating fast as whitespot can soon kill a fish.

okay but what whitespot meds? there's tons out there and i'm sure some of them are junk.

What's your location?
