My nextdoor neighbour has a large tropical setup and has just become concerned about two of her fish. One Platy and one molly, both are very thin and spend a lot of time sitting on the bottom of the tank. They both still eat and have no loss of colour.

Any ideas whats wrong and how to treat it please?

Could be a internal problem, expect a post from Wilder shortly, Wilder is spot on with diseases.

yep instead of the "cheque is in the post" its the "wilder is in the post", she's a friend of mine (internet one anyway)

i had this with my live-bearers over a year ago, i call it the "skinnys"

They used to eat as well, and still lose weight, i never had one pull through, tried all sorts of treatment, eventually i re-did the tank, long story, it never affected any other fish except the live-bearers and my home grown live-bearers at the time in the same tank were much less likely to get this problem, it was mostly LFS stock i had purchased.

I got loads of advice from all sorts, even e-mailed Waterlife and they e-mailed me back

The consensus was internal parasites which can be a devil to cure, although at the time i hadnt heard of these "wormer" meds

I would remove skinny fish if possible

What other fish in tank?

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Really thin fish
Not eating.
Internal parasites.
Signs are
Long stringy white poo or clear, being thin or bloated, swollen enlarged anus or red and inflamed anus.
Worms hanging out of the anus.

Parasites like flukes and velvet can cause fish to be thin.

Fish tb can also cause a fish to be thin.
Finally old age.

Very large tank, common plec, sucker loach, upside down cat, two angels, red tail black shark, various tetras and tiger barbs. The tank is well established, over 3 years.

Affected fish are from lfs (platy) and tank born (molly)

She hasnt got a test kit at the moment but it is only the two fish sick. There are no signs of any stringy poo or external parasites/swelling,

Internal parasites are most likely then?

When a fish look like a skelton the chances of surival are very slim, as the fish is infested with the camallanous worms.
Camallanous worm do a lot of damage to the organs resulting in bacterial infection.
You can save the rest of the fish as the tanks wants treating.

Get you a link to wormer plus if your friends thinks its internal parasites.
