Hi again all can u tell me if this is a problem?, i got some real plants today just noticed a tiny snail in tank with 2 antennae coming from head, is this going to cuse trouble or not .? ta
Hi,
I would remove it as it is probably a pond snail and they lay loads of eggs and soon you will be over run. If you have any loaches they will eat it.
It shouldn't be a problem if you don't mind snails. Snails will not harm the fish and do not produce a very large amount of waste. The only downside to snails in the aquarium is that they do eat certain plants and they reproduce fast.
Some fish however, enjoy eating snails and snails are a large part of their diet. It depends on what fish you keep though.
This snail will probably eat your plants but will not harm fish. They breed quickly and soon if you do not get rid of it it will eat all of your plants. It could just me a algea eater but probably not.

I just had to do a major cleaning of my 112 liter since it was overrun with mini-ramshorn pest snails. They do add to the waste and look bad but do not cause harm to the fish. At first I thought the little buggers were fun to look for but after a bit they became very annoying. I have the good fortune of having a 500 liter that I could move my Swordies into so I could rip out everything and clean the gravel with boiling water. I know that there are probably a few microscopic eggs or baby snails that I was unable to rinse off from the plants that were washed in tap water and reintroduced after the gravel was heat treated. If you see one pest snail then you probably have 100 that you do not see. Loaches can keep them in check or get rid of them. Either accept them or be prepared to go to WAR.
If you see snails i say go to war removing all you see, they do eat plants. Ok so that little snail looks cute now but they'll soon over run a tank and you'll learn to just hate them, i do. I'm going to try Gastropex
My major cleaning seems to have worked. Washed the plants thoroughly in tap water, scrubbed the plastic log/cave, boiled the opawa root, drained the tank, scrubbed it and poured boiled water over the gravel and let it sit for ten minutes. Not seen a snail for four days Time to go out and get me an Apple snail or maybe a Bristlenose Plec.
I like the snails. I have two big ones that I bought on purpose, I think they look like flowers when they are moving across the bottom. But if they become a problem, I will get loaches.
Try putting in a lettuce leaf at night time.....when you get up the next morning it will be covered in snails....simply remove the leaf and do with them as you wish....works every time.
I feed my fish lettuce all the time and have never seen the snails get near the stuff. It could be that the fish that eat the lettuce chase them off. I have used cucumber but that has not been a lot of help, I think Clown loaches are a better bet but they need a lot of room to grow so less then a 75gal is not a good permanent home for them.
