Can small feeder goldfish(little bit bigger than an inch) cycle a tank(ten gallon)?

Yes they will cycle the tank, but what will you do with them once the tank is cycled.

He'd probley throw them away since they are just feeder fish that only live for a short time anyway.

I do hope you are joking.. Throw them away, comments like this make my blood boil. Shouldn't make a difference if it's a Discus fish or a feeder goldfish still deserve to be treated with the same respect.

Also where did this idea that feeder fish only live for a short time come from?? Feeder fish is only a name for a small, cheap species that is easily available. They will live as long as other of the same family in the correct conditions.

Sorry for the rant, but sick of stupid comments!

Well I've had feeder goldfish and they lived for less than a week. Even in a 10g.

Thats because feeders arent take care of at stores and a usually sick.

I was asking because my Grandma has 5 pond golfish thats shes bringing in for the winter and she wants to do a fish cycle for there winter tank. 3 of the golfish are feeders and she thought she read somewhere that you can use them to cycle a tank, but I wanted to make sure.

Feeder fish aren't any different from any other fish. They are relatively hardy (except the ones that you buy that are sick and diseased), you can cycle with them and if you take care of them, they will live a long, normal life. They only call them feeders because they are small and cheap but if you get healthy ones and take care of them they will live 20 plus years just like any other goldfish.

Durbkat, your fish die because your tanks aren't cycled. You are the one that has posted several times about cycling a tank in 2 or 3 days. Unless you are seeding from an established tank, cycling in that time frame is impossible. It's not likely that it will even happen that quick if you seed the tank.

Well if it didn't cycle how come when I got the water tested the ammonia was .0 the nitrite was only like .1 or .2 and the nitrate was .0 then huh? And my bad they were put in a 2g fish tank with this wierd disign it had a bridge filled with water that the fish could swim through and thier were already fish in this tank it were two other goldfish but this was like when I was 8 so didn't know about tank size for goldfish and this feedergoldfish died the next day.

I cycle'd all of my tanks using feeder goldfish. After the cycling process, I re-home them in outdoor ponds that belong to friends. I have a large stock tank for my horses and I have 4 or 5 in there as well, they live year round (using a stock tank de-icer). I never have to feed them as they chow down on mosquito larvae, and whatever falls out of the horses mouths. In one year, those feeders grow from one inch to well over 6 inches. I also have a 10 gallon that houses 3 fan tailed goldfish, and I have used them as well to cycle, then put them back into their 10 gal tank. Much less trouble to cycle with goldfish than to use chemicals.

Any tank that has a reading other than 0 for ammonia AND nitrite is not cycled. You have barely started the cycle since you have .1 or .2 nitrite and no nitrate. Only a heavily planted tank or one with a very light fish load will ever have 0 nitrates. If you have fish and test everyday for a full week and get 0 for ammonia and nitrite, then you are most likely cycled.

Wow, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to interpret that as a joke, your own ignorance about feeders, or an insult to ScoutCarcer . I know I'd be insulted if someone implied I'd treat my fish like that, even if they were "just feeders".

Anyway, yes, it should be ok to cycle with them as long as there's a plan as to what to do with them afterwards. Goldfish tend to be pretty tough critters; they should be able to handle it ok.

they should be okay

NOTE:
They only call them feeder goldfish because they are sold small enough to give to large fish such as oscars and pirahnas and other predetory fish for food.

Durbkat, no offense, but this is supposed to be a friendly forum offering good and accurate advice about fish, if you don't have anything constructive or positive or even true to say, then keep your words to yourself. Most goldfish live for decades, some for 40yrs+, any fish that lives for just a week is not good.

Ok everyone I'M SORRY! :-( I shouldn't have said that I was just in a bad mood that day and I guess I didn't think that through. So if you can forgive me that would be great.
