Very Shy And Skittish Jd's

I have 3 JD's (barley even 1" long) in my 75 gallon with plenty of hiding spaces and 11 platies to be rehomed this weekend. Is it normal for them to never come out when someone is by the aqarium, because i see them out then when I or someone else walks in they go and hide. Also they only stay to the bottom half of the tank where as the platies normaly stay up top but the brave ones go down and hang with the JD's and school with them and the JD's don't care. From what i have read the JD's would tear the crap out of them. IDK what it is but can some give me some info about how to get them to go up and eat there pellet food because it floats and they never go up to get it and it goes to waste.

MEGA NEWS: I just noticed the biggest of my 3 JD's is protecting one of my pregent platies who is currently giving birth. Any other platy or one of the other JD's that get even close he chases them around the tank and tries to nip them. I think i got a retard JD who thinks he is a platy?
