I have a VERY pregnant platy I bought yesterday and I was wondering when she will give birth so I can put her in a breeding trap. I had very little success determining the birth date and lost a few batches. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67537901@N02/6839428173/

Not the best picture, but I know how hard it is to get pictures ;)

She doesn't appeared to be squared off yet, but the angle of the picture isn't ideal.
i'd say she's about as far along as my female, she probably has about a week or so to go. (I may be wrong, I've had my molly square off and drop all in one day before)

I'd let her out of the breeding trap. In fact, even when she squares off, I'd leave her out of the trap, it would be ideal to get a 5 or 10 g tank and out her in that once she squares off, that way her fry would have a whole tank to swim around in. But if that's not possible, let her have the fry wherever she pleases in the tank and scoop them up in a net and put them in the breeder trap that way. Most breeder traps are much to small for any fish except fry.

With most fry it is alright to leave them int he trap for a few weeks and then when they reach a size that is bigger than the biggest mouth in the tank they can be released and should be relatively safe :)

Hope that helps, :good:
