I have an extremely pregnancy guppy in a birthing net, and she has been in there stress free for 4 days, every day she shows signs of an imminent birth (rubbing her self on the bottom of the net, pushing and the staying still with fins pushing out. She is not stressed at all at being in the birthing net, but should I taking her out. I am watching very carefully and do not know what to do for the best. I have watched my swordtail give birth and they appear to handle it differently to a guppy. Any advice or comments?

Sometimes the birthing net can cause stress

Are there any fish in the tank likely to eat the guppy fry?

Forgot to add,

Welcome to the forums! :good:

I have swordtails, small strippy non fin nipping barbs, platys and rainbow fish. I have three live plants and two artificial plants in there. My tanks is 180 litres and is no where near full to capacity.

My guppy is so squared off at the bottom and has been for days. I have another female who looks exactly the same, she is also showing signs of a birth, but nothing is happening with her either. The guppy in the birthing net is showing no signs of stress whatsoever and swims with her nose pointing down, and then shoots to the top and is still for a minutes or two. thats my tank

Platies would definitely eat the fry. Please take a pic of the pregnant guppy and we should be able to estimate the number of days until she pops. What temp is the tank at?

The tank temperature is 28 and I I tested my PH, nitrate and amonia levels at 7.00 this morning, they are all spot on, I will see if I can get a picture tonight and post it.

Guppies take about 25 days to go through pregnancy at the temp. How long did you get her?

No don't change the temp 28C is high enough. Guppies are in a virtually constant state of pregnancy so if you have had her for a month then it is likely she is going to drop today or tomorrow just leave her in the net until tomoz. A good alternative to the net is the breeding box I use an old piece of tupware and prick loads of end of a needle size holes in it then clamp to the side, your guppy may prefer that.

Sorry I have not been on the forum for a considerable amount of time guys. Glad to say I had 12 fry but sadly mum died a couple of days later. All doing well. I have now had 21 mickie mouse platy fry and one of my other pregnant females are ready to burst (i think it will be today, although I am at work) so things really settled down, levels are fine, and I have quite a few fry to look after. What a great hobby!
