Venturi effect

Wow. I knew it had something to do with Bernoulli :D I think we should petition for all filter manufacturers to include Bignose's description in their manuals.

Failing that, I nominate Bignose for Informative Post of the Month.

Failing that, nice post, and thanks :D

wow, that made my head hurt, but i think i understand! and i have one of those venturi things on my fluval 2, i just called it an 'air inny bit' before though... :*)

Awww shucks, you guys are a amakin' me blush. :*) I am just happy that my explaination was clear enough to follow. I do belive that a large part of studying science is being able to explain it to "the man on the street." And that includes, fish sciences.

I mean, sure there are fancy biological terms for the nitrogen cycle, but you can explain it to most anybody by saying... look, the fish excrete ammonia, ammonia is bad for the fish's health but fortunatly some bacteria come along and eat ammoina and spit out nitrite. Nitrite is also bad for the fish, but again more different bugs come along and eat the nitrite and spit out nitrate -- which is not nearly so bad for your fish. So, really, to keep your fish happy, you need to keep your bacteria happy.

Sure, a microbiologist will have a great deal more detail, but with the stuff above, you've explained the basics and haven't lost your audience. In this case, I could have written a bunch of equations and whatnot, but would anyone have followed? (Hopefully the students I TAed in fluid mechanics... :) )

And, Waterloo Kid, thanks for chiming in with the fact that the Python works that way. I dont use one, so I didnt know, but that is exactly what I'm talking about.

yep also with that action it can smoke a cigarette in about 30 seconds......

it was a science lesson at school! same valve from a python with a ciggy on the end!
