Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm Si and will probably annoy everyone with some really stupid questions frequently

First one being this...

I have reaquired my old rio 300 tank off my sister in law and some pleco's and cats with it. That was maybe three weeks ago. It was a nasty urgent move that was destined to cause a problem or two.
My fish have developed velvet. Last wednesday I went to pets at home and bought a treatment, Anti Slime and Velvet. I put in as instructed. But have since lost two panther cats and a small pleco.
I was advised to leave things alone until the treatment was finished. That wlll be next Wednesday.
What I'd like to know is, Should I perform a water change before repeating the treatment?

I really do value any responce and advive. Especially if you have gone through the same as myself.

Si.

Hi Si,

How did the move go? Did you protect the filter and keep it wet whilst moving it? was it cleaned at all? The answers to these questions will determine if your tank is cycled. If the filter was washed under tap water or allowed to dry out then all the good bacteria will have died and your tank will be cycling. If that's the case then yes, you will hav eto do water changes to get the ammonia and nitrites down. Do you have a testing kit? Can you one and test your water?

BTW, I have gone through exactly what you've been through. Aquired a tank, filled it up with tap water, cleaned the filter under tha tap then chucked the fish in. I also lost a silver shark to velvet about 6 weeks later.

Please ask away, I wish I'd found this forum before I did.

We need to know if the velvet's killng them or the water condition.

don't do a water change until the treatment is over, probably do an extra few days of treatment to be safe. also turning the temperature gradually up to 30 degrees helps if you can increase the airation aswell (1 degree per hour or around that, add an airstone or turn filter up)

I bought a Tetra pump with a 3 inch air stone... That was more for my wife 'cause I'm not fussed on them. But I had read that the tank needs airing more when treating, so I leave it on 24/7.
I'll sort the temp out shortly. And as for amonia, I tested the amonia and ph the other day, they were fine. I'll repeat the test again on Wednesday.

I really apreciate your responces, thank you very much indeed

Si
