hi everyone!
after watching him since friday night, i now think one of my male danios has velvet as he has yellow dusty patches on his back, infront of his dorsal fin. i have WS3 white spot treatment and was wondering would this be useful for treating it? in the wolf's list of medications it is:
White spot terminator (WS3) by Sinclair (AKA KING BRITISH) (UK) Acriflavine, Malachite Green & Quinine sulphate used for Protozoal Infections in Freshwater fish. Note Best used at 25-30C; Toxic to marine life?
also, my usual water change day is Tuesday. if i start treatment today i wont be able to do the water change as normal will i? so would you do a water change before i start treatment or will it be ok till afterwards? or can i do the change as normal on tuesday?
gonna test the tank stats now, but any advice would be great.
thanks,
ss

nopw ws3 won't cure Oodinium
you need to get something like Protozin or a copper sulphate based med.

what you need to do right now is
Raise water temperature to 82F
no light for several days (48hr blackout, then 48hrs without tank lights)
Discontinue carbon, UV and/or zeolite filtration during treatment

you need to treat the entire tank as Oodinium is more contagious than ich

Edit
yes it is best to do a water change before commencing a course of treatment

cant get any meds till tomorrow, will this be ok if i turn the lights off now, do a water change and raise the temp?

here's the best pic i could get...

Will my plants be ok for that amount of time?
what do you use to black out the tank? i was thinking of a bin liner?

Thanks wolf

yes do that now and start treatment tomorrow

the best thing for a blackout is a duvet, a heavy blanket or
bath towels. you need to wrap the entire tank so that no light gets in at all
and don't forget to turn off the flurescent tubes :good:

good luck and keep us posted

thanks for all your advice wolf.
i covered the tank and turned of all the lights. put the temp up and left the airstone on, just in case.

sent the bf round to the lfs today for medication to treat velvet/protazoan, they sent him home with tetra fungicide!
i went back and they sent me away with myaxin, which is for fin rot! i really couldn't be bothered to go back in and argue (all the meds are behind the till) so i went to a well known pet superstore and got some interpet no.7 and have started that treatment.

should i leave the lights off still? and is this a single dose treatment? it says to leave it a week before re-dosing, so i guess i should wait till then and see if symptoms have persisted? and should i feed as normal?
thanks for everything
ss

yes leave the lights of for 4 days
you can let ambiant room light back(ie unwrap the tank)
tomorrow morning.

good news! the interpet and darkness did their job and the danio has velvet no more! :yahoo:

he is back to his old flirty self and all the fish look really good again. i dont now what stressed them to begin with as the water tests always come back fine and i do weekly water changes and feed a varied diet, but i'll keep my fingers crossed and hope they'll be ok from now on.

is it true danios are more susceptible to velvet? its just something i read on the internet when researching whether my fish had velvet or not.

thanks for the advice wolf!

personally I've never seen a danio with velvet
and I've had thousands (litteraly).
so no I'd say they are not prone to it.

goods news on the recovery, well done you :good:
